What do you do when things don't go as planned?
I'll tell you what I used to do. I used to get myself in an emotional uproar and become overwhelmed because “my plan” didn't work out.
Here's the thing…I've had to sit down and evaluate myself in the last several months. What does that mean exactly?
It means I have looked inside myself to see what triggers irritation, and how I handle irritation. I say irritation, because when things don't go as planned, most people get irritated. Lately, I have been more self-aware. For the last year I have been working on my mind-set, I have been diving deep in the last six months or so.
When I went to see Gary Vee at Diane Hochman's event in April, Gary started out by saying self-awareness is key. I already had an idea that was very important, and had moderately been working on self-awareness. Since April, my main focus has been on self-awareness. The funny thing is, since I have made self-awareness my main focus the last two months, so many things have gone not “as planned,” more than usual. I am not going to list them all, because it's pointless, I have worked them out.
However, the biggest hurdle I have overcome without becoming emotionally upset is when the wifi wasn't working properly on vacation this year. You see, we've been renting the same beach house for four or five years now. The place is great, oceanfront, two master bedrooms with sliding doors and an upstairs deck off both bedrooms. Two more bedrooms downstairs, and a first floor deck that joins the beach. The wifi has been superb the last few years, so this year I had a plan. A plan to take massive action on my business while I was on vacation because the wifi reached all the way to the beach the last few years.
Here's where the brakes come to a screeching halt…half the time this year at the beach house, the wifi didn't even work inside the house, so I certainly couldn't get anything done on the deck or on the beach. Well, I had two choices, become distraught because “my plan” wasn't' going to work out, or go with the flow?
I chose to go with the flow. I enjoyed myself in the moment, every moment on my vacation (I'm still there!)
